Adult cancer patient transport support

Following the closure of the Chartwell Inpatient Ward at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), The Chartwell Cancer Trust recognises that some patients may face additional challenges travelling to King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, for haematology care.
In recognition of these changes, and the additional practical and financial pressures that travelling for treatment can create, Chartwell is providing funded transport assistance to eligible adult cancer patients who may otherwise experience difficulty accessing essential care.
We recognise that medical vulnerability, mobility difficulties, financial pressures or a lack of transport options can make getting to hospital challenging. Our aim is to help reduce these barriers and support patients in accessing the treatment they need.
Who can access support?
Transport assistance is available to eligible adult cancer patients receiving treatment at the Chartwell Unit or the new Haematology Day Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), and to former PRUH patients within the hospital’s catchment area who are receiving treatment at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill.
What support is available?
- Taxi transport: For patients who can safely travel by car but need financial assistance or help with transport arrangements. This may include patients who are medically vulnerable, have mobility difficulties, lack support from family or friends, or face financial or practical barriers to travelling.
- Supported patient transport: For patients whose individual needs mean that a taxi is unsuitable and who require additional assistance during the journey, but do not require an emergency ambulance.
Patients should speak to their hospital or clinical team, who can refer them to The Chartwell Cancer Trust or discuss their transport needs with us.
