More than a robot… a lifeline

For most children, school is about far more than lessons. It is where friendships are made, confidence grows and everyday life happens. For a child undergoing cancer treatment, that normality can disappear overnight.
Long periods in hospital or recovering at home often mean missing months of education and being separated from classmates at a time when they need their friends the most. The emotional impact can be just as challenging as the physical one.
Since 2019, The Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust has been helping to change that through our AV1 Robot Programme. What began with just one robot has grown into a fleet of 32, supporting more than 100 children across 65 schools throughout London, Surrey and the South East.
Long before the COVID pandemic highlighted the importance of staying connected, we were introduced to the remarkable AV1 Robot. It was a simple idea with the potential to make an extraordinary difference. Could technology help a child with cancer remain part of school life, continue learning and stay connected with friends while undergoing treatment?
The answer came in the form of one extraordinary young man, Lewis, who became one of the first children in the UK to use an AV1 Robot through The Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust, helping us demonstrate just how life-changing the programme can be. Lewis was able to remain part of everyday school life which helped him to successfully completed his exams.
32 Robots | 100+ Children Supported | 65+ Schools Connected | Countless Friendships Protected
The success of the programme has attracted national attention, with the AV1 Robots featured across regional and national media, helping to raise awareness of the difference they make to children and young people undergoing cancer treatment.

Our work is far from over. There are still children waiting, still classrooms to reconnect, still friendships to protect and futures still to preserve. |
Businesses, community groups and individuals can support the programme by sponsoring an AV1 Robot through our Bronze, Silver or Gold Sponsorship Packages, helping to fund maintenance, upgrades or even a brand-new robot.
