USING THE POWER OF NUTRITION TO HELP SUPPORT PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER

Following the success of two pilot cancer survivorship programs earlier this year, The Chartwell Cancer Trust is delighted to be able to support Plant Based Health Online once again with two further Virtual Group Consultation programmes. These are scheduled for November 2021 and have been designed specifically for prostate and colorectal cancer patients.

Plant Based Health Online (PBHO) A CQC regulated healthcare service providing online support from a doctor-led team of healthcare professionals. PBHO uses an evidence-based diet and lifestyle approach to support patients living with common chronic illnesses and cancer.

Virtual Group Consultations (VGCs)
We understand how having a supportive network can really drive positive health outcomes. This is why we have designed these programs to deliver evidence-based care in a supportive group setting. Our VGCs bring people together who have shared similar lived experiences and provide opportunities for learning, understanding and expert advice. They are delivered in a caring, confidential environment and it is the peer support and group dynamic that make them so powerful.

Why prostate and colorectal cancer?
Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and there is strong evidence to suggest that environmental factors contribute to prostate cancer risk, with diet choice being strongly implicated. Cancer of the Colon is the 3rd most common cancer in the UK (in females and males). Recently, a rapid rise in the incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults (aged 20-39) has been reported and evidence shows that a diet high in processed meat may be associated with early onset of the disease. Importantly, we know that 54% of colorectal cancer cases in the UK are preventable with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Background to Plant Based Health Online
In 2018, The Chartwell Cancer Trust was made aware of the benefits of a lifestyle medicine approach through Dr Shireen Kassam, Consultant Haematologist, at King’s College Hospital, London. Dr Kassam is passionate about plant based nutrition. Since 2013, she has been immersed in the science of nutrition and health and is committed to providing education and advocacy amongst healthcare professionals and the public alike. In January 2021, Dr Kassam and Dr Laura Freeman co-founded and launched PBHO the first of its kind in the UK. Dr Freeman, Medical Director, of PBHO, turned to lifestyle medicine after her own diagnosis of cancer and discovered first hand, the benefit of a plant based lifestyle.
