Update on plans for the Chartwell Inpatient Ward at PRUH

The Bromley Health Scrutiny Committee met on 21 January to receive a further update from the King’s College Hospital Trust regarding its emerging proposals for Haematology Cancer Services at PRUH, and potential changes affecting the Chartwell Unit. Senior Trust leaders attended the meeting to present an interim progress report Public-PackAgenda-Document-for-Health-Scrutiny-Sub-Committee-21_01_2026-17_00-1.pdf and to respond to further questions from councillors.
Importantly, the King’s Trust was clear that no decisions have been made nor will any changes be implemented until a full programme of engagement had been completed. It was also made clear that The Chartwell Unit ‘footprint’ would remain unchanged, with a heavy focus on the ‘reconfiguration’ of Haematology Cancer services at the PRUH. Senior representatives acknowledged that earlier communications had lacked adequate clarity and rigour and confirmed that proposals need to be developed more robustly. This next phase of work will focus on clearer articulation of patient pathways underpinned by comprehensive risk and financial analysis, alongside a commitment to thorough engagement with patients, residents, staff, and wider stakeholders before any conclusions are reached. Councillors welcomed this approach and reiterated the importance of transparency, scrutiny and due process as the work continues.
The Trust indicated that the next substantive report will be ready in the spring, following the completion of the engagement period. A Special Scrutiny Committee Meeting is therefore anticipated in April or early May, subject to scheduling.
We will continue to engage constructively and keep supporters informed as this next phase of work progresses, ensuring that the interests of patients, families and the local community remain central throughout.
