Fayre Do’s have been patrons of The Chartwell Cancer Trust since May 2017. For more than 25 years, they have been delighting the taste buds of the world’s most respected actors, producers and film crews. With Chef Jamie Cook at the helm, they produce tasty and nutritious menus, freshly cooked and delivered across London, the UK and Europe. Fayre Do’s impressed our supporters as official caterers at our VIP Hospitality event at the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight last August and we are delighted to have them back with us again this year. They have recently introduced a revolutionary ‘open fridge scheme’ because of the growing concern of food waste around the world. Jamie Cook reports…

Food waste is a growing concern. In the UK alone, eight million of us will struggle to put food on the table today. Yet we continue to throw away seven million tons of food and drink each year.

Food for thought

When food waste goes to landfill it decomposes without access to oxygen and creates methane, which is 23x more deadly than carbon dioxide. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Poverty in the UK is still on the rise, which is bananas when we are throwing delicious meals of service quality into the bin!

However, ignoring the situation is no longer excusable. With the global population set to rise to over 9.5 billion by 2050, there are huge pressures facing the world’s food system. It is estimated that around a third of the world’s food is wasted each year – that is enough to end world poverty!

As a location catering company, this is a bitter pill to swallow. Our reputation for providing generous amounts of everything often results in there being leftovers. As a result, we feel a responsibility to ‘step up to the plate’.

But you know what they say? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Therefore, we asked ourselves the million-dollar question. How do we continue to provide the winning formula you have loved and known for 25 years, whilst doing our best to tackle the inexcusable global issue of food waste? The answer… We let you take the food home with you!

Waste not, want not

We have let our food do the talking on the growing concern of food waste by introducing our ‘open fridge’ scheme, opening the door to a fairer world in The Fayre Do’s Fridge of Fairness!

After service, any untouched food is decanted into airtight containers and left in our ‘open fridge’ for anyone who wishes to take something home, free of charge. Any monetary donations will go to our chosen charity, The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

Help us to save the planet; it is a piece of cake

When you think about it, ending food waste is a piece of cake. It only takes small changes in each of our lives to save more food. However, until more people understand how those small changes can add up to make a better world, we need to keep talking about the problem.

Together, we can make a difference and empower others to make the small changes that can have a huge impact on the food waste problem! We hope our open fridge scheme will have a positive impact on our community, making life a little sweeter for everyone.
